TinkleTimes Project: A device that relays instant feedback for the quantity of toilet paper
This was a part of Design Studio III(Integrated Sensors) and the goal of the TinkleTime project was to create a device that tracks how much toilet paper was left in the toilet paper dispenser at a given time.
We utilized Arduino and sensors to measure the toilet paper level and indicated it using LED lights to the users. In addition, we have created a wireless communication device that indicated the level of toilet paper, which could potentially be placed outside the bathroom or given to custodians.

Details:
The usage of public restrooms is dreadful but in desperate need to relieve oneself, it is required to use. The only thing that makes a public restroom worse is when there is an absence of toilet paper. On average, a person uses fifty-seven sheets of toilet paper a day and about eight to nine, give or take, per toilet use. With the help of TinkleTimes, a user will never be left without toilet paper. TinkleTimes is a universal communication that relays data to the front of the toilet paper dispenser to inform whether there is toilet paper or not, before entering the stall or the restroom itself. Not only will the user be informed of a lack of toilet paper before pursuing the stall, the custodians will also be informed when to replace the toilet paper and which stall needs it. This will reduce the amount of time the custodial staff has to work and look around for empty toilet paper dispensers which could potentially lead to less custodial staff required. With the tracking of the frequency of the toilet paper replacement, the data can then be used to estimate how often the cleaning must be done. TinkleTimes will improve efficiency in custodial staff but this may lead to staff being laid off. More resources will be required to implement TinkleTimes such as batteries and lightbulbs. TinkleTimes will prevent the awkwardness of handling one's business without toilet paper and the awkward plea of some toilet paper from the first stranger that walks in the restroom. Make public restrooms better today with the help of TinkleTimes.

Our Solution
We took a commercially available toilet paper dispenser and modified it to attach our toilet paper tracking system. This system consisted of Arduino, sonar sensor, radio wave transmitter & receiver, and LED lights.

The distance was measured form the side of the dispenser to the toilet paper using the sonar sensor to estimate the toilet paper level. More distance sonar sensor measured, lower the level of toilet paper that was left inside the dispenser.

This information was then expressed with LED lights with colors of red, yellow, and green, in a similar manner to a traffic light to communicate the level of toilet paper to the user. In addition, the same information was sent to a wireless communication device to display the word, "Full", "Low", or "Empty" to indicate the level of toilet paper offshore location.

Pitures of Our Work

This is a picture of us working on making a toilet paper roll that will fit in the toilet paper dispenser that we bought. Unfortunately, the toilet paper roll that we found did not have a hole in the middle...

This is a picture that shows the soldering we had to do underneath the red casing. We did not give much space for the wires so at the end the wires were pushing up against the lid, but it fit!
