Test Plan

We have conducted several tests on our TinkleTime toilet paper dispenser prototype. We will specifically be testing for the following features of our toilet paper dispenser. Our features include toilet paper tracking system, LED display that indicates the toilet paper level in each stall, and wirelessly connected communication device that indicates the status of toilet paper in each stall on campus.

Toilet Paper Tracking Accuracy

Testing Procedure

  1. Put a brand-new roll into the dispenser

  2. Continually pull the toilet paper out of the dispenser

  3. Stop when the light just changes color

  4. Measure the actual distance from the sonar sensor to the toilet paper and compare it to the Arduino measurement

  5. Check the communication device and check if it has the correct display of toilet paper status

Test Results

Sonar Test Result.PNG

Testing the sonar’s distance within a certain accuracy was the goal of this test. The range for a feedback of each light is 0 ≤ green ≤ 4, 4 <yellow ≤ 8, red > 8. These were the constraints put into the Arduino code. In the end, the constraints were feasible because it passed this test. We wanted the sonar’s distance to be within 0.3 cm of the input. As seen on the chart, both the yellow light and red light were achieved within the +/- 0.3 cm. The communication device had the correct display for every trial.

Operating Range.png

Communication Device Operating Range

Testing Procedure

  1. Turn on the toilet paper tracking system and the communication device

  2. Slowly walk away from the toilet paper tracking system with the communication device

  3. Measure the distance when the communication device loses its signal

  4. At least test the operating range in three different locations

Test Result

Operating Range Results.PNG

NRF24L01 transceivers communicating to each other. When there is no obstruction, the transceivers can communicate in an average of 93.3 meters. When the transceivers were outdoors in an open windy field, the average distance was 26.6 meters. This lowers greatly due to wind obstruction by causing refraction in the waves between the two transceivers. The last test is the most valuable. How far can the transceivers be when there are bathroom stalls and a wall in between. The average was 15 meters when conducting the test through the walls. One person was outside the bathroom door acting as a custodian walking past, while another was inside with the toilet paper dispenser. In the end, we believe if we attach an antenna to the transceivers, the range will increase and be more feasible for the custodians if TinkleTimes is used in real time.

Durability Testing

Testing Procedure

  1. Set the toilet paper tracking system on a flat surface

  2. Start loading it with weight until the loaded weight is 10 lb.

A basic test is making sure the toilet paper dispenser can hold over 10 lbs. This test was created because someone using the restroom may use the toilet paper dispenser has an aid to help get up from the toilet seat. The product TinkleTimes which will be attached to the toilet dispenser will not obstruct the dispenser, hence, the dispenser can and did hold over 10 lbs.

Toilet Paper Replacement Speed

Testing Procedure

  1. Start with a toilet paper roll in the toilet paper tracking system with the lock

  2. Record the time it takes to unlock the dispenser, take out the roll, replacing it with a new roll, and once again locking the dispenser

  3. At least repeat the process five times

Test Result

Time to Change the Toilet Paper Roll.PNG

As you can see from the box plot above, average time and median time for changing a roll of toilet paper were 12.21 seconds and 12.15 seconds respectively. Our criteria for success stated this time to be under 60 seconds, therefore we were able to succeed in this area with great ease.
